Accused of hacking US President's account, now caught by police for stealing cryptocurrency

The British-born Joseph James O'Connor has been accused of stealing digital currency (cryptocurrency).

A UK man who has made headlines in the past by hacking the Twitter accounts of stars and politicians in the United States has once again come under police scrutiny. But this time the allegations are more serious. On Wednesday, allegations of theft of digital currency (cryptocurrency) were leveled at the British-born Joseph James O'Connor.

The 22-year-old and his gang are masterminds of crimes such as customer identity theft and aiding in 7,84,000 U.S dollars (approximately Rs 5.82 crore) crypto theft through SIM-swap attacks. There are also allegations of money laundering and computer hacking.

According to US prosecutors in Manhattan, Joseph and his associates stole cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litcoin. Joseph did this by linking the fraudsters' mobile numbers to their own SIM cards (SIM-swap).

Originally, the entire operation was carried out targeting three officials of the Manhattan Cryptocurrency Company. The crypto of two customers was stolen and smuggled by Joseph James alias Plugwalko and his companions. According to the prosecutor, the crime was planned from March to May 2019.

Note that Joseph is still not free from the punishment of the notoriety of hacking the Twitter account that took place last year. In July 2020, he and his friends were as influential as US President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla chief Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, reality TV show star Kim Kardashian and rapper Yeh. People hacked Twitter accounts.

In this situation, another serious crime like theft of digital currency has come to light against him. Those accused of crypto theft could face up to 20 years in prison.
