Apple is hiring former Tesla Autopilot software director for its car project

Apple was trying to rebuild the team with its automotive project after top management left it earlier this year. The technology specialist has now been able to put a stop to Christopher “CJ” Moore to look at the software side of the project.

Apple has hired another Tesla chief executive for its automotive project, which has been kept under threat until now. Christopher “CJ” Moore, who served as Director of Tesla's Autopilot unit, has now joined Cupertino based major technology and will be working at the end of the project software.

Employment is confirmed in a new Bloomberg report. As of publication, Moore will report to Stuart Bowers, another former Tesla CEO who joined Apple at the end of 2020. Hiring is the latest update to Apple's car project, many of which have been made public by the company.

While the constant influx of professionals from the automotive world to the Apple team is enough to predict the company’s plans for the future. Apple began planning to build a self-driving electric car around 2014 and launched the Project Titan initiative. Since then, it has been a rollercoaster ride for Apple, initially declining with a focus on car manufacturing and later shaken by many top executives completely losing faith in the project.

For example, Doug Field, the man in charge of the entire Apple project, recently left the company to join Ford. Field's departure marks the fourth such departure from the CEO of Apple's automotive project since February this year. Benjamin Lyon, Dave Scott and Jaime Waydo, all left during the first half of this year. There are no other updates from Apple's car project this year.

Apple has been very successful in filling these vacancies in advance. In place of Doug Field, Apple replaced Kevin Lynch with project manager. Prior to this, Lynch was leading the engineering of Apple Watch software, right from the start. One of its most recent appointments is that of Urlich Kranz, former CEO of Canoo Automotive and former CEO of BMW AG.

Not surprisingly, most of these pre-signatures were former Tesla executives who left the world's largest electric car manufacturer a few years ago. Bloomberg shared that former Tesla railway manager Michael Schwekutsch and interior manager Steve MacManus both have Apple now. Moore will therefore have many older colleagues to meet at Apple's headquarters.
