Tesla recalled nearly 12,000 U.S. vehicles sold since 2017 because a communication error could cause a false warning of a collision or unexpected opening of emergency brakes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Tuesday.

FSD is an advanced driver assistance program that handles certain driving tasks but Tesla says it does not make cars self-sufficient.
The NHTSA said Tesla "released FSD 10.3 after receiving reports of operational unconsciousness of the emergency braking system" and "reviewed the software and released the FSD 10.3.1 version of the affected vehicles."
The organization said it would "continue its negotiations with Tesla to ensure that any security breaches are acknowledged and remedied as soon as possible."
The recollection comes after NHTSA last month asked Tesla why it had not issued a notice to discuss software updates made to its Autopilot driver assistance program to improve the ability of vehicles to access emergency vehicles.
Tesla said the issue was caused by the disconnection of the software between the two internal chips which created a problem that could result in "detection of the wrong object when there are other vehicles."
If the automatic emergency braking system starts working while driving, it may increase the risk of a collision in the back, Tesla said, adding that he was unaware of the crash or related injuries.
Following October 24 reports, Tesla said it had canceled the FSD update on unmanned vehicles and shut down FCW and AEB on the affected vehicles.
On the same day, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk wrote to FSD: "Seeing problems with 10.3, so we're going back to 10.2 for a while. Please note, this is to be expected with beta software."
On October 25, Tesla began posting software updates on the air and re-launched FCW and AEB features in the updated cars.
Tesla said that as of October 29, more than 99.8 percent of vehicles - all except 17 - had undergone an update and no further action was required.
NHTSA in August opened a formal security investigation into Tesla's Autopilot system on 765,000 US vehicles following a series of accidents involving Tesla models and emergency vehicles.
The U.S. auto safety agency also asked Tesla in October about "Autosteer on City Streets" the company also referred to as FSD which was first hired in October 2020, and raised concerns about the restrictions on drivers' safety problems.
