It is not yet clear whether Modi's Twitter was hacked by a cyber criminal. News agency Reuters says the Indian authorities informed the Twitter authorities after realising that the Prime Minister's Twitter account was not under their control. The Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Sunday that the PM's account had been revived by tweeting from a recognised Twitter account.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has called on the Indian government to ignore the tweet posted at a time when the Indian government had no control over Narendra Modi's Twitter account.

Modi has 7 crores 30 lakhs  followers on Twitter. It is unknown at this time, that exactly how long the account was out of the control of the authorities.

However, in a statement sent to Reuters on Twitter, the platform took necessary steps to regain control of the account as soon as it came to light that Narendra Modi's account was in despair. The company said in an immediate search that no other Indian government account had been found.

A similar incident took place in September 2020 on the Twitter account of Narendra Modi's personal website. The service called on Twitter followers to donate to a relief fund through crypto currency by tweeting from that account.
