The Biden government has promised to expand ISS operations by 2030, NASA manager Bill Nelson said on Friday.

"The International Space Station is a beacon of cooperation in peaceful scientific research that has led to countless scientific, educational, and technological advances for mankind over the past 20 years," Nelson said in a statement.

"I am just happy that the Biden-Harris administration has promised to keep the ISS running until 2030."

NASA plans to use commercial space stations and privately-owned platforms in Earth orbit for future space exploration, the Senate said. This included the decision to keep ISS running until 2030.

In December, NASA funded $400 million to plan space stations and other "commercial destinations" for Blue Origin, Nanoracks and Northrop Grumman.

The U.S. space agency says it will reduce costs and make it easier to focus on Artemis missions to the moon and missions to Mars.

ISS was first approved by 2024. NASA says the space station will remain operational beyond 2028, judging by its technical capabilities.

If ISS continues until 2030, NASA will "facilitate the easy transfer of Earth's orbital capabilities to one or more commercially operated destinations by the end of this decade," the space agency said in a statement.
